Karst: A Unique and Valuable Environment

Karst landscapes are terrains in which rainfall and rivers drain into the earth instead of primarily flowing on top of it. Subsequently, we often see sinkholes, sinking streams, and below the surface, caves with underground streams that empty into the lowest streams as springs. Bedrock in karst landscapes is usually limestone. Cracks, joints, and openings are enlarged by acidic water. In some areas of the world vast cave systems provide a record of the development of ancient people and drainage and erosion through time. And karst landscapes provide a set of unique benefits and problems to people.
